"marie claire" is a fashion magazine that originated in France in 1937 and is published in 34 countries around the world, including the United States and the United Kingdom. The Japanese edition of "marie claire" was first published in 1982. Japan was the first country "marie claire" expanded to internationally, and it was handled by Chuo Koronsha (currently Chuo Koron Shinsha). The publisher changed successively, to Kadokawa Shoten in 1999, and to Hachette Fujin Gaho (currently Hearst Fujingaho) in 2002. In 2009, the license agreement between the parent company, the French media company Lagardère Active and Marie Claire Album, ended, leading to the suspension of the Japanese edition.

The new "marie claire" is scheduled to be revived in July 2012, which will mark the 30th anniversary of "marie claire" first arriving in Japan. The first issue of the new "marie claire" will be about 40 pages long and will include fashion and beauty information, as well as more reading pages. It is distributed to subscribers of the Yomiuri Shimbun, mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
